God Stands in the Divine Assembly and Demands Justice
Psalm 82 opens with a courtroom scene: God stands in the “congregation of the mighty” and judges among beings called elohim. The accused have failed their responsibility by favoring the wicked instead of defending the poor, fatherless, afflicted, and needy. Whatever one concludes about the identity of the elohim, the moral charge is unmistakable: delegated authority is accountable to the supreme God and is measured by justice for the vulnerable.
The manuscript simply calls these figures earthly rulers. That is one historic interpretation, but serious scholarship also reads the scene as a heavenly or divine council. A careful reading should therefore introduce the issue without pretending the debate is settled; Deep Study will compare the major proposals and the Hebrew terminology.
