When Faithful People Vanish and Flattery Fills the Land
Psalm 12 laments a crisis of truthful speech. Faithful people seem to disappear while neighbors speak vanity, flattery, and double-hearted words. The problem is not merely bad manners; social trust collapses when speech is manipulated for advantage.
Romans 3 contains several Psalm quotations about corrupt speech, but its lines come from specific psalms such as Psalms 5, 10, and 140 rather than being a direct citation of Psalm 12:1–2. The manuscript’s Romans connection is therefore thematic. Christian readers can also contrast human falsehood with Jesus as the truthful witness, but that is a theological contrast rather than a prediction. The psalm first teaches readers to recognize deceptive speech as a covenant and justice issue.
