Foreign Marriages and Priestly Compromise
Nehemiah confronts marriages with women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab, noting that some children no longer speak the language of Judah. His response is physically severe and should not be treated as a model for church discipline. His biblical argument invokes Solomon: even Israel's famously loved king was led into sin through foreign wives. The issue therefore includes covenant loyalty, worship, language, and communal continuity, though modern scholarship rightly notes that ethnicity and postexilic identity are also part of the social picture. The crisis reaches the priesthood when a descendant of the high priest is connected by marriage to Sanballat. Nehemiah drives him away to protect priestly covenant obligations.
