Passage Overview · Free · James 4:13–16
Your Life Is a Vapour: Planning under the Lord’s Will
James addresses merchants confidently scripting the next year: travel to a city, trade, and make profit. The problem is not planning itself but boasting as though tomorrow, life, and success were owned. Human life is a vapour that appears briefly and vanishes. The wise alternative is creaturely dependence: “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
Where this fits in the story: Proverbs repeatedly warns against boasting about tomorrow and teaches that human plans remain under the LORD’s direction. Ecclesiastes uses vapor imagery to expose the fragility and elusiveness of life. James stands squarely inside that wisdom tradition.
