Discipline as the Father’s Loving Training
The community has struggled against sin but has not yet resisted to the point of blood. Hebrews then quotes Proverbs 3:11–12, interpreting hardship through the framework of a father’s discipline. Divine discipline is not evidence that believers are abandoned; legitimate children are trained because they belong to the household. Human parents discipline imperfectly for a limited time, while God disciplines for his children’s good so they may share his holiness. Discipline is painful in the moment but intended to yield the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those trained by it.
