Jonah, Solomon, and the Light You Receive
Jesus refuses a demand for a spectacular sign except the sign of Jonah and points to the repentance of Nineveh and the queen who came to hear Solomon. “A greater than” Jonah and Solomon is present. The section then returns to lamp and eye imagery: the issue is whether the hearer receives the light already given.
Where this fits in the story: Gentile Nineveh responded to a reluctant prophet, and a foreign queen traveled to hear Israel’s wise king. Jesus uses those Scriptures to warn people who possess greater revelation yet remain resistant.
The judgment logic is therefore based on response to light: greater revelation brings greater responsibility.
