The Purpose of Proverbs and the Fear of the LORD
Proverbs opens by telling the reader what this book is for: to form people who can recognize wisdom, receive correction, exercise justice and equity, grow in discernment, and understand the compressed speech of the wise. The foundation is not cleverness but the fear of the LORD. Verse 7 therefore functions as the theological doorway into the entire book: wisdom begins with a rightly ordered relationship to God, while folly begins by despising wisdom and instruction.
