The LORD’s Anointed at the Right Hand
Psalm 110:1 is one of the NT’s central royal texts. Jesus quotes it in the Synoptic Gospels to press the question of how David’s son can also be David’s Lord; Peter quotes it in Acts 2 to explain Jesus’ exaltation; Hebrews uses it to distinguish the enthroned Son from angels. Here the NT gives explicit Christological interpretation, not merely a devotional resemblance.
The divine oath appoints the royal figure as a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews repeatedly quotes and expounds this verse in relation to Jesus, especially in chapters 5–7, arguing for a priesthood grounded in divine oath rather than Levitical genealogy. This is explicit inspired Christological interpretation and a major King-Priest thread.
Psalm 110 places the LORD’s anointed at God’s right hand; Colossians tells believers to seek the realm where the risen Christ sits at the right hand of God. The right-hand session therefore continues one of the New Testament’s most pervasive messianic uses of Psalm 110.
