Confessing and denying Christ
Matthew 10 turns compassion into mission. Jesus gives the Twelve authority, sends them first to Israel, teaches them to depend on hospitality, warns that rejection carries real accountability, prepares them for persecution, and tells them not to fear because the Father knows even the sparrows. Following Jesus can divide households and cost a life—but receiving his messenger is receiving Jesus himself.
Because disciples share their master’s path, slander and hostility should not surprise them. Jesus therefore repeats “fear not,” grounding courage in God’s ultimate authority and the Father’s detailed care—even sparrows and numbered hairs are not outside his knowledge.
Where this fits in the story: wisdom and prophetic texts repeatedly contrast fear of people with fear/trust of God.
Where Scripture takes it next: Peter’s later denial will show how real fear of people can be, while the risen Jesus restores mission after failure.
Evidence boundary: divine care does not mean disciples avoid martyrdom; the same discourse explicitly prepares them for persecution and death.
Jesus warns that denial before others results in denial before the Father; 2 Timothy likewise warns, “if we deny him, he also will deny us.”
