Return to Me: The Restoration Begins with Repentance
Zechariah begins in the second year of Darius, after Judah has returned from Babylon but before the rebuilt temple is finished. God’s opening word is not ‘build faster’ but ‘Return unto me.’ The generation standing in Jerusalem is warned not to repeat the stubbornness that sent its ancestors into exile. When the earlier prophets spoke, the fathers ignored them; eventually they had to admit that God’s covenant warnings had caught up with them.
Where this fits in the story: this is the spiritual doorway into the whole book. Restoration is more than moving back to the land. The people must return to the LORD who had brought judgment under the covenant. Ezra 5:1–2 independently names Zechariah alongside Haggai during the temple rebuilding.
