Judgment and Rescue: Angels, Noah, Sodom, and Lot
Peter answers the apparent success of false teachers by reaching backward through Scripture’s judgment stories. Sinning angels are kept for judgment; the ancient world was judged by the Flood while Noah was preserved; Sodom and Gomorrah became an example while righteous Lot was delivered. The examples accumulate toward Peter’s conclusion: the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial and how to reserve the unjust for judgment. The passage deliberately holds judgment and deliverance together. Noah and Lot are not random Bible trivia; they become inspired interpretations of earlier stories for a threatened church. The angelic example also opens a Second Temple background question. Many readers connect it with Genesis 6 and the Watchers tradition known from 1 Enoch, but 2 Peter does not explicitly name Genesis 6 or the Nephilim, so a responsible reading must show both the strong contextual case and the evidence boundary.
