A Book of Remembrance and God’s Treasured Possession
Some in the community conclude that serving God is pointless because the proud prosper. Others respond differently: those who fear the Lord speak with one another, and God listens. A “book of remembrance” is written before him, and he promises that they will be his treasured possession in the day when he acts.
Where this fits in the story: “treasured possession” reaches back to Exodus 19:5 and Deuteronomy’s covenant language for Israel. The imagery of heavenly books develops elsewhere in Scripture—from Moses’ plea about God’s book, through Daniel’s judgment scene, to Revelation’s opened books.
