The Proud Removed and a Humble Remnant Left
Restoration does not mean Jerusalem simply returns to the way it was. The LORD removes the proud and leaves an afflicted, humble people who trust in his name. Zephaniah’s hope is therefore purification, not mere survival.
The remnant is described morally as well as socially: they do not practice injustice, speak lies, or carry a deceitful tongue. The book has moved from corrupt speech and divided worship toward truthful speech and trust in the LORD. They also “feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid,” language that recalls Scripture’s recurring shepherd-and-rest picture of security under God’s rule.
