The Word in Josiah’s Days: Judgment Begins with Judah
Zephaniah opens by locating the prophet in the reign of Josiah, king of Judah. That matters because Josiah’s reign sits at a hinge in Judah’s history: Assyrian power was weakening, religious reform was coming, and yet Jerusalem still carried the habits of generations of compromise.
The judgment announcement is intentionally enormous. The LORD says he will sweep away humans, animals, birds, and fish. The sequence sounds like creation being run backward: the ordered world of Genesis is pictured as coming apart under judgment. Zephaniah is not describing an arbitrary divine outburst. The next verses explain the covenant problem—Judah has mixed worship of the LORD with Baal, the host of heaven, and other loyalties. Some have turned away from the LORD entirely; others still use his name while dividing their allegiance.
