Last Days, Distorted Loves, and Jannes and Jambres
The “last days” are described as dangerous because disordered loves produce disordered lives: lovers of self, money, and pleasure replace love for God. The list climaxes in people who possess “a form of godliness” while denying its power. The danger is therefore not merely open paganism but religious appearance without transforming reality.
Where this fits in the story: the New Testament can speak of the “last days” as the era already inaugurated by Christ while still looking toward its culmination. Timothy is not simply given a chart of a remote future; he is warned about the character of opposition he already must face.
