Do Not Refuse the Voice: An Unshakable Kingdom
The Sinai warning becomes a greater warning not to refuse the One who now speaks from heaven. Haggai’s promise that God will shake heaven and earth “yet once more” is interpreted as the removal of shakable created things so that what cannot be shaken remains. The congregation is therefore receiving an unshakable kingdom and should respond with grateful, reverent worship. Hebrews closes the paragraph with Deuteronomy’s declaration that “our God is a consuming fire.” Grace and reverence are not opposites in Hebrews; confident access and holy fear belong together before the same God.
