Toward the Holy Temple: Salvation Is of the LORD
Jonah remembers YHWH, and his prayer is oriented toward God’s holy temple. He contrasts those who cling to “lying vanities” with his own vow of sacrifice and thanksgiving, then reaches the theological center of the prayer: “Salvation is of the LORD.” Where this fits in the story: Solomon’s temple prayer had envisioned people crying toward the temple in distress, while the Psalms repeatedly confess that deliverance belongs to YHWH. The irony continues: Jonah celebrates mercy when he needs it, yet chapter 4 will expose his anger when the same God shows mercy to Nineveh.
