They Conspire against the Dreamer — Hatred Descends into the Pit
Joseph goes to seek his brothers, and their hatred turns into a murder plot: “Behold, this dreamer cometh.” They intend to kill him, throw him into a pit, and then see what becomes of his dreams. Reuben intervenes to prevent immediate bloodshed, hoping to restore Joseph to Jacob, but Joseph is stripped of his garment and cast into an empty pit. The irony is central: the brothers are trying to defeat the very future God will bring about through their actions. Psalm 105 later interprets Joseph as one whom God “sent” before Israel, while Acts 7 says the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt but “God was with him.” Those later texts do not excuse the brothers. They place human evil inside a larger providence that the brothers cannot see.
