Led by the Spirit: Children, Heirs, and Abba
Believers owe the flesh nothing. Those led by God’s Spirit are God’s children, and the Spirit does not return them to slavery and fear but produces the cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit bears witness with believers’ spirit that they are children of God.
Paul joins adoption to inheritance: children are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, provided they suffer with him so that they may also be glorified with him. This suffering-to-glory pattern mirrors the Messiah’s own path and prepares the creation-wide hope of the next paragraph. Galatians 4 uses the same Abba/adoption/heirship cluster, showing that this is a stable Pauline way of describing life in Christ.
