Silence Before the Lord: The Sacrifice and Search of Jerusalem
“Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD.” The command to silence changes the atmosphere. The Day of the LORD is near, and Zephaniah pictures the coming judgment as a sacrifice prepared by the LORD himself. The shocking reversal is that Jerusalem’s elites and exploiters are not the protected guests of the feast; they are among those being called to account.
The oracle moves through royal officials, foreign fashions, violent households, commercial districts, and complacent citizens. God says he will “search Jerusalem with candles,” an image of judgment that misses what people imagine can remain hidden. The men “settled on their lees” are like wine left undisturbed on its dregs: they have become comfortable enough to believe the LORD will neither do good nor do evil.
