Passage Overview · Free · Amos 5:18–20
The Day of the LORD Is Darkness, Not Light
Some Israelites apparently longed for “the day of the LORD,” perhaps assuming it meant God would defeat their enemies. Amos overturns that confidence: for an unjust covenant people, the Day can be darkness rather than light. His little story is almost dark comedy—a man escapes a lion, meets a bear, reaches home, leans on the wall, and is bitten by a snake. There is no safe room inside unrepented rebellion. Later prophets and the New Testament continue the Day-of-the-LORD theme toward final judgment and salvation. Amos supplies a permanent warning against assuming that God’s coming must vindicate “our side” regardless of how we live.
