Edom’s Cup—and Zion’s Punishment Completed
The poem turns from Zion to Edom. Edom may rejoice over Jerusalem for the moment, but the “cup” of judgment will pass to her as well. Zion’s punishment is described as reaching its limit, while Edom’s iniquity will be uncovered.
This joins a larger prophetic conversation. Jeremiah uses the cup of divine wrath for nations; Obadiah condemns Edom for gloating and participating in Judah’s day of disaster. Lamentations therefore ends chapter 4 with a reversal: Jerusalem’s devastation is not permission for neighboring peoples to celebrate cruelty forever. The Judge who disciplined Zion also calls the nations to account.
