How Long? Violence and Twisted Justice
Habakkuk opens with a question many readers expect Scripture to avoid: Why does God seem silent while violence and injustice flourish among his own people? The prophet sees spoiling, strife, and contention; Torah is “slacked,” and judgment comes out crooked. The problem is not merely that bad people exist. The covenant community’s own systems of justice are failing.
Where this fits in the story: Torah had required impartial judgment and righteousness; the Prophets repeatedly expose what happens when covenant people keep religious identity while justice collapses. Habakkuk therefore begins inside Israel’s own covenant crisis before Babylon ever enters the scene.
