Deceivers, the Doctrine of Christ, and the Limits of Hospitality
The danger is now named: many deceivers do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. Second John calls such a teacher “a deceiver and an antichrist,” closely paralleling 1 John 4. The community must not move beyond the doctrine of Christ in a way that loses the Father and the Son. Verses 10–11 then restrict hospitality to teachers who bring this false doctrine. In a world where traveling teachers and missionaries often depended on household lodging and material support, receiving someone could function as active sponsorship, not merely private politeness. This passage should not be turned into a blanket command never to show ordinary kindness to unbelievers. The immediate issue is refusing to become a partner in the teaching and spread of a message that denies Christ.
