Many Antichrists, the Truth, and the Anointing
This is the New Testament’s earliest concentrated use of the word “antichrist.” John does not begin with one distant political ruler. He says “many antichrists” are already present and identifies the issue christologically: denial that Jesus is the Christ and denial of the Father and the Son. The opponents “went out from us,” so the danger arose from a rupture within the Christian circle rather than merely from outside persecution. Against the seducers, the readers have an “unction” or anointing from the Holy One and are urged to let the message heard from the beginning remain in them. Verse 27 does not reasonably mean that Christians never need human teachers—the letter itself is teaching them. In context, the anointing protects the community from teachers who would replace the apostolic confession with a denial of the Son.
