Why Art Thou Cast Down? Hope in God
The shared refrain of Psalms 42 and 43 closes the pair: the worshiper questions his despair, commands himself to hope in God, and anticipates future praise before circumstances visibly change. Biblical hope here is not denial of grief; it is a decision about where the final word belongs.
The New Testament’s language of living hope through Christ fits naturally with this pattern, but the verse itself is not quoted there. Free therefore keeps the distinction clear: Psalm 43 teaches hope in Israel’s God, and Christian readers receive that same God-given hope within the fuller gospel story.
