The Struck Shepherd and Gethsemane
Matthew 26 places Jesus' death inside Israel's Passover and covenant story. At the meal Jesus calls the cup 'my blood of the covenant,' echoing Sinai, and says it is poured out for many for forgiveness. He then quotes Zechariah's struck shepherd, accepts the bitter 'cup' in Gethsemane, and at his trial joins Psalm 110 and Daniel 7 to describe his coming vindication and authority.
Where this fits in the story: Zechariah’s shepherd material joins judgment, scattering, and later purification; biblical righteous sufferers bring anguish honestly before God.
Where Scripture takes it next: the arrest immediately fulfills the scattering prediction, while Peter’s denial completes Jesus’ warning.
Evidence boundary: Gethsemane does not portray Jesus as unwillingly dragged to the cross; it portrays costly obedience in the face of genuine horror.
The cup Jesus accepts in Gethsemane belongs to the Old Testament image world of divine judgment and wrath, represented by Psalm 75 and several prophetic texts. The cup motif deepens the meaning of his willing submission without depending on a single identifiable source verse.
The cup Jesus accepts in Gethsemane belongs to the Old Testament image world of God's judgment/wrath cup, deepening the significance of his willing submission.
Jesus explicitly quotes Zechariah's struck shepherd and scattered sheep and applies it to his arrest and the disciples' flight.
Jesus’ “my soul is exceeding sorrowful” in Gethsemane participates in the Psalms’ lament vocabulary, including Psalm 42’s downcast-soul language. The emotional correspondence is meaningful, but exact source dependence cannot be demonstrated and should remain possible rather than certain.
Jesus’ sorrow in Gethsemane may resonate with Psalm 42:11’s repeated language of a soul cast down and disturbed within. The connection belongs to a broad lament tradition and should remain possible because Matthew gives no clear source signal.
Jesus’ Gethsemane sorrow may also resonate with Psalm 43:5, which repeats the language of a cast-down, disturbed soul. The similarity is useful as lament background, but the relationship remains interpretive rather than an identifiable quotation or certain allusion.
Jesus himself interprets Zechariah’s shepherd oracle in relation to his passion. Jesus directly quotes Zechariah’s struck-shepherd oracle and applies it to his own arrest and the disciples’ scattering.
