Passover and the Blood of the Covenant
Matthew 26 places Jesus' death inside Israel's Passover and covenant story. At the meal Jesus calls the cup 'my blood of the covenant,' echoing Sinai, and says it is poured out for many for forgiveness. He then quotes Zechariah's struck shepherd, accepts the bitter 'cup' in Gethsemane, and at his trial joins Psalm 110 and Daniel 7 to describe his coming vindication and authority.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus 12 marks redemption from slavery; Exodus 24 seals covenant in blood; Jeremiah 31 promises new covenant forgiveness; Isaiah 53 describes the Servant bearing sin for many.
Where Scripture takes it next: Paul and Hebrews interpret the Lord’s Supper and Jesus’ death through covenant and sacrificial categories.
Evidence boundary: manuscript traditions differ between forms of “new covenant” wording in the Synoptic/Pauline tradition. Sacramental theological debates should be presented separately from the passage’s explicit covenant/death claims.
Presence / covenant lens: “This is my blood of the covenant” reaches back to Exodus 24’s covenant-ratification language, while Luke and Paul explicitly speak of the “new covenant” and Hebrews joins that language to Jeremiah 31. This is one of Scripture’s clearest covenant bridges into Jesus’ death.
Jesus’ words over the cup, “my blood of the covenant,” deliberately echo Exodus 24’s covenant-blood declaration and apply it to His approaching death. The Last Supper therefore develops Sinai’s covenant-ratification language in a Christ-centered direction.
Jesus’ “my blood of the covenant” deliberately echoes Moses’ “blood of the covenant” at Sinai and applies covenant-ratifying blood language to His impending death. Matthew’s Passover setting strengthens the connection between Exodus covenant imagery and the Last Supper.
Blood poured out 'for many' and forgiveness resonate strongly with the Servant who bears sins of many and pours out his life, but the verbal relationship should be graded rather than called an explicit quotation.
Matthew's 'for the remission of sins' and covenant setting strongly belong to Jeremiah's promised covenant-renewal world, where God forgives iniquity and remembers sin no more, though Matthew does not quote Jeremiah here.
David ascends the Mount of Olives weeping during his rejection, while Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives as his Passion begins. The shared rejected-king geography creates a meaningful Passion-shaped mirror, but the Gospels never announce 2 Samuel 15 as fulfilled prophecy.
Worth showing only as a secondary possible echo, never as the source of Jesus’ saying. Zechariah’s covenant-blood language is a possible secondary resonance behind Jesus’ covenant-blood saying, but Exodus 24 is the primary source.
