Darkness, Psalm 22, the Torn Veil, and the Son of God
Matthew 27 shows the Scriptures converging around Jesus' death in ways both clear and complicated. Psalm 22 is unmistakable in the mockery and Jesus' cry. The thirty pieces of silver draw on Zechariah while Matthew names Jeremiah, creating a real composite-citation question. At Jesus' death the temple veil tears, the earth shakes, tombs open, and a Roman centurion confesses him as God's Son.
Darkness covers the land, Jesus cries Psalm 22:1, dies, and the temple veil tears from top to bottom. Matthew adds earthquake, opened tombs, later appearance of raised holy ones, and the centurion’s confession: “Truly this was the Son of God.”
Where this fits in the story: Psalm 22 moves from abandonment cry to vindication and worldwide praise; temple-access imagery has developed from Exodus and Leviticus; cosmic disturbance often accompanies divine judgment/revelation.
Where Scripture takes it next: Hebrews develops opened-access theology around Christ’s death, while Matthew’s own resurrection narrative follows immediately after burial.
Evidence boundary: the raised-saints episode is unique to Matthew and historically difficult to reconstruct. Scripture states it; external corroboration is presently lacking. The event should not be inflated with legendary details the text does not give.
Presence / covenant lens: The torn veil should be read with both the Gospel event and Hebrews’ access theology. It can signal access, judgment on the old sanctuary order, and the significance of Jesus’ death. Matthew never tells us which theological meaning is the only one, and the Gospels do not specify the curtain’s thickness.
Matthew reports that at Jesus’ death “the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.” Exodus 26 establishes the sanctuary veil as the boundary before the Most Holy Place; Hebrews 10 later gives the clearest inspired Christological access interpretation through Jesus’ blood and flesh. This is strong sanctuary-to-Christ narrative development, not a claim that Exodus 26 directly predicted the tear.
Matthew 27:46 directly reuses Psalm 22:1 in relation to Jesus/Christ; the connection should be read in both the original psalmic setting and the New Testament’s inspired Christological use.
The temple veil marked restricted access to the Most Holy Place. At Jesus’ death the temple veil is torn, creating a strong Christian typological contrast: access to God is opened through Christ rather than through the old sanctuary barrier.
Amos pictures the sun going down at noon and feasts becoming mourning; the Gospels report darkness from the sixth to the ninth hour at Jesus’s crucifixion. Early Christians such as Irenaeus explicitly connected the two. The New Testament itself does not cite Amos here, so this is traditional typology / possible Christological mirroring, not explicit fulfillment.
