My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me? Lament and Remembered Trust
Psalm 22 begins with an agonized question but not with unbelief. The sufferer feels abandoned, cries day and night, and yet remembers that the holy God answered Israel’s ancestors when they trusted him. Lament and faith occupy the same prayer.
Jesus speaks Psalm 22:1 from the cross in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34. That is an explicit New Testament reuse and makes Psalm 22 central to Christian reading of the Passion. A careful reading should say exactly that without adding a theory of how divine abandonment worked beyond what the Gospel texts themselves state.
