Passage Overview · Free · Matthew 19:1–12
Marriage, Divorce, Creation, Moses, and the Kingdom
Asked about lawful divorce, Jesus reaches behind later legal debates to creation: male and female, leaving and cleaving, and the two becoming one flesh. He explains Deuteronomy’s divorce provision in relation to human hardness and says “from the beginning it was not so.”
Where this fits in the story: Genesis 1–2 supplies the creation pattern; Deuteronomy 24 regulates a broken-world practice without becoming Jesus’ final statement of the ideal.
Where Scripture takes it next: Paul later cites Jesus’ divorce teaching when instructing Corinthian believers.
