The Wise Builder and the Authority of Jesus
Matthew 7 closes the Sermon by turning teaching into decision. Jesus warns against hypocritical judgment but still requires discernment; encourages persistent prayer because the Father is good; summarizes the Law and Prophets with active neighbor-love; and then presents paired outcomes—two roads, two kinds of fruit, two professions, and two foundations.
The Sermon ends by making response to Jesus’ words the difference between a house that survives and one that collapses. Matthew then emphasizes the crowd’s astonishment: Jesus teaches with authority unlike their scribes.
Where this fits in the story: wisdom traditions compare righteous living to secure building and folly to ruin, but Jesus places his own words at the center of the test.
Where Scripture takes it next: chapters 8–9 immediately display the authority heard in the Sermon through cleansing, healing, forgiveness, command of nature, and command of demons.
Evidence boundary: the “rock” here is most directly the practiced teaching of Jesus in the parable. It should not be automatically merged with every other biblical rock image.
Parable focus — Wise and Foolish Builders: Jesus makes the foundation question very practical: hearing him is not the same as obeying him. The storm is not a code in which every weather detail has a secret meaning; the comparison tests whether his teaching actually becomes the structure of a life.
