Seeking Rest at the Threshing Floor
Naomi now returns to a word she used on the road from Moab: rest. In Ruth 1:9 she prayed that each daughter-in-law might find rest in the house of a husband. In Ruth 3:1 she tells Ruth that she will seek that rest for her. The repeated word ties the book’s grief to its developing hope.
Her plan sends Ruth to the threshing floor, where Boaz is winnowing barley. Ancient threshing floors were work sites connected with separating grain from stalk and chaff, and harvest time could involve guarding the processed grain. Naomi tells Ruth to wash, anoint herself, dress, observe where Boaz lies down, uncover his feet, and wait.
