The Road Home and the Woman Who Would Not Leave
The turning point begins with bread. Naomi hears that the LORD has “visited his people in giving them bread,” so she starts home. On the road she urges Ruth and Orpah to return to their own households, blessing them for the kindness they have shown to the dead and to her. The Hebrew concept behind that kindness—hesed—becomes one of Ruth’s great themes: loyal, costly goodness expressed in relationship.
Orpah returns. Ruth “clave” to Naomi. Ruth’s famous words in verses 16–17 are therefore much more than sentimental friendship. She binds her future to Naomi’s journey, Naomi’s people, Naomi’s God, Naomi’s land, and even Naomi’s burial place. Her oath invokes the LORD by name and accepts death as the only legitimate separator between them.
