The Word That Changes Naomi’s Reading of the Story: Redeemer
Ruth returns carrying an unexpectedly large amount of barley and the food left from her meal. Naomi’s first question is practical: where did you work? The answer—Boaz—changes what Naomi thinks may be possible.
Naomi blesses him and speaks again of hesed, “kindness,” toward the living and the dead. The Hebrew grammar allows discussion over whether the kindness in view is primarily the LORD’s or Boaz’s; either way the narrative tightly intertwines divine faithfulness and human faithfulness. God’s care is becoming visible through the actions of a man who belongs to Elimelech’s kin group.
