Yet You Have Not Returned to Me

Five times the refrain lands: “yet have ye not returned unto me.” Famine, withheld rain, crop disease, locust loss, pestilence and war, and an overthrow compared with Sodom and Gomorrah are narrated as warning judgments that failed to produce repentance. Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28 provide an important covenant background for this cluster of agricultural, military, and disease curses. The point is not that every modern disaster can be decoded as a direct divine message. Amos is interpreting these specific events prophetically inside Israel’s covenant. Verse 11’s “firebrand plucked out of the burning” is later echoed in Zechariah and resonates with Jude’s urgent rescue imagery, but here even surviving judgment did not bring Israel back.
