The House Built by Greed Testifies Against Itself
The second woe attacks wealth and security acquired through exploitation. The oppressor tries to set his “nest on high,” building a house meant to escape disaster, but the very building materials become witnesses: the stone cries from the wall and the timber answers it.
The image is deliberately unsettling. What looked like permanent success contains testimony against its owner. The house itself embodies the injustice by which it was built.
Luke 19:40 records Jesus saying that if his disciples were silent, the stones would cry out. Habakkuk 2:11 is a possible biblical resonance, and a prior Luke research pass already flagged it; however, Luke does not identify Habakkuk, so this study keeps that connection explicitly disputed rather than calling it a quotation.
