Simon Carries the Cross; Jesus Warns the Daughters of Jerusalem
Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus’ cross behind him while women mourn. Jesus turns to the “daughters of Jerusalem” and warns them to weep for themselves and their children because judgment is coming.
Where this fits in the story: the scene visually echoes Jesus’ earlier call for disciples to take up the cross and follow. Yet Simon’s forced service should not be romanticized as proof of inward discipleship; Luke simply presents the striking narrative image.
