Passover, the New Covenant, and the Betrayer at the Table
Jesus eats Passover with the apostles, speaks of its fulfillment in God’s kingdom, takes bread as his body, and identifies the cup with the new covenant in his blood. Betrayal is present at the same table.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus Passover, Sinai’s covenant blood, prophetic new-covenant hope, sacrifice, kingdom banquet, and Jesus’ self-giving converge. Luke’s passion is interpreted before it happens.
A major “aha”: the meal points backward and forward at once—back to Israel’s deliverance and covenant, forward to kingdom fulfillment and the community that will remember Jesus through this meal.
