Two Men in the Temple: Self-Trust and the Cry for Mercy
Two men pray in the temple. The Pharisee measures himself against other people and recites his religious performance; the tax collector stands far off, beats his breast, and pleads for God’s mercy. Jesus says the tax collector goes home justified.
Where this fits in the story: temple, sacrifice, mercy, humility, and justification meet in a scene about how a sinner approaches God. The concluding reversal repeats Luke’s pattern: the self-exalter is humbled and the humble is exalted.
