The Older Son Outside the Feast
The older son hears celebration but refuses to enter. He speaks like a servant who has accumulated merit and resents the father’s generosity toward “this thy son.” The father answers tenderly—“Son, thou art ever with me”—and insists that celebration is fitting because the lost brother has returned alive.
Where this fits in the story: the older brother brings the chapter back to the original grumbling of religious insiders over Jesus receiving sinners.
The story ends unresolved. Luke leaves the older brother outside so the grumblers—and readers—must decide whether they will enter the Father’s joy.
