Faith, the Mulberry Tree, and Servants Who Have Only Done Their Duty
The apostles ask for increased faith. Jesus replies with a mustard-seed image and then a servant parable: extraordinary trust is not a means of gaining status before God, and obedient servants do not turn basic duty into grounds for boasting.
Where this fits in the story: biblical faith is lived reliance, not a substance measured for spiritual prestige. Luke pairs confidence in God with humility about the servant’s role.
The passage corrects two distortions at once—despair that “my faith is too small” and pride that faithful service makes God indebted to us.
