Unintentional Sin and Defiant Sin Are Not the Same
Numbers distinguishes sins committed unintentionally from the person who acts “with a high hand”—open, defiant rejection of YHWH’s word. Sacrificial provision is given for inadvertent failure; deliberate covenant contempt is treated differently. This sharp distinction helps interpret Leviticus 4’s repeated focus on unintentional sin.
Leviticus 4 provides purification offerings for individuals, including leaders, who sin inadvertently. Numbers 15 develops the same Torah distinction by giving a sacrifice for an individual’s unintentional violation while contrasting defiant high-handed sin. The passages therefore clarify the scope of inadvertent-sin sacrifice across the Torah.
Leviticus 4 provides a purification offering for the whole congregation when Israel sins inadvertently. Numbers 15 develops that same communal inadvertence category and prescribes sacrifice for the congregation while contrasting high-handed rebellion. The passages reinforce the Torah’s distinction between unintentional covenant violation and defiant repudiation.
Numbers 15 distinguishes inadvertent communal/individual violations, for which sacrificial provision exists, from defiant high-handed wrongdoing. This sharpens the meaning of Leviticus 4's inadvertence language.
