Remove Major Sources of Ritual Impurity from the Camp
Israel is not treating illness or ritual impurity as moral worthlessness. The point is sacred-space order: the camp surrounds YHWH’s dwelling, so certain forms of ritual impurity are temporarily kept outside. Leviticus supplied the detailed purity rules; Numbers now applies them to the organized wilderness camp.
Leviticus 13 requires a person with a serious skin affliction to live outside the camp while unclean. Numbers 5 explicitly orders people with tzaraat and other major impurity conditions outside the camp so that the camp containing YHWH’s dwelling is not defiled. Numbers therefore applies the Levitical exclusion within the wider camp-purity system.
Numbers 5 requires persons with certain discharges to be sent outside the camp, while Leviticus 15 assumes extensive household contact with a discharger. The relationship between the texts is a useful legal-development question rather than a contradiction to hide.
