Jesus explicitly quotes Leviticus 19:18 in Mark 12 when he names love of neighbor as the second great commandment alongside love of God. The link is therefore direct and certain: Jesus does not replace the Levitical command but gives it a central place in his summary of faithful obedience to God.

Jesus explicitly recites the Shema and identifies wholehearted love of the one God with heart, soul, mind, and strength as the foremost commandment. Mark presents the confession as the center of covenant devotion.

The scribe’s confession that God is one and there is no other echoes Deuteronomy’s repeated declaration that YHWH alone is God, while also affirming Jesus’ Shema citation. The confession belongs to the Gospel’s Shema-centered debate.

The scribe affirms Jesus’ Shema citation by confessing that God is one and there is no other, restating Deuteronomy’s central claim of exclusive divine identity. The reply confirms the theological core of Jesus’ answer.

The scribe repeats Deuteronomy’s command to love God with the whole person and says that such love, together with neighbor-love, is greater than burnt offerings and sacrifices. The exchange highlights Torah’s own hierarchy of covenant love.

Isaiah 45:21 declares that there is no God beside the LORD, and Mark 12:32 affirms that God is one and there is none other. The wording and one-God confession form a probable echo rather than an announced quotation.

Paul explicitly gathers the neighbor commandments into love of neighbor, developing the same Torah synthesis Jesus foregrounds in Mark 12.

James calls “love your neighbor as yourself” the royal law, reinforcing the Leviticus command Jesus pairs with the Shema.

Paul reformulates Israel’s one-God confession around “one God, the Father” and “one Lord, Jesus Christ,” a major later Christological development of the Shema horizon Jesus quotes.
