The Lord of the Sabbath
As Jesus’ disciples pluck grain on the Sabbath, Pharisees accuse them of doing what is unlawful. Jesus answers from the story of David receiving the consecrated bread in a time of need and then states that the Sabbath was made for humanity, not humanity for the Sabbath. He closes with the striking claim that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
Where this fits in the story: the Sabbath comes from creation and Israel’s covenant life, so this is not a minor scheduling argument. Jesus reasons from Scripture and then places the Son of Man in an authoritative relationship to the Sabbath itself.
