The Valley of Slaughter
Judah has placed abominations in the LORD’s house and burned sons and daughters at Topheth in the Valley of Hinnom—something God says He did not command or conceive. Jeremiah announces a terrible reversal: Topheth will become the “valley of slaughter,” and the familiar sounds of joy and marriage will cease.
Leviticus 20 condemns giving children to Molech and makes the offense a matter of covenant holiness and community accountability. Jeremiah 7 condemns Judah for burning sons and daughters at Topheth, placing child sacrifice inside the prophetic indictment of Jerusalem. The connection strengthens the Torah-to-prophets continuity even though Jeremiah’s wording does not settle every debate over the precise identity or etymology of Molech.
Revelation’s silencing of bridegroom and bride in Babylon directly recalls Jeremiah 7:34’s judgment in which the voices of bridegroom and bride cease from Judah.
