Israel’s Defeat and the Ark Brought to Battle
Start here: Israel faced the Philistines in battle and suffered a great defeat. Seeking to secure victory, they brought the ark of the covenant from Shiloh, carried by Hophni and Phinehas, believing its presence would guarantee success. When the ark entered the camp, Israel shouted, and the Philistines trembled. Yet, when the battle ensued, the Philistines defeated Israel again, killing thirty thousand foot soldiers. Hophni and Phinehas were slain, and the ark was captured.
Canonical window: The ark cycle exposes the danger of treating God’s presence as something human beings can manipulate. The LORD defeats idolatry, judges irreverence, restores the ark, calls Israel to repentance, and delivers the nation through Samuel’s intercession. The connection cards below show the specific Scripture links and how strongly each one is supported. This overview does not turn every similarity into a prophecy or type.
