The Spirit Rests on the Seventy
YHWH tells Moses to gather seventy elders and places upon them the Spirit that is on Moses so they can share the burden. Two men, Eldad and Medad, prophesy outside the gathered group, and Moses refuses Joshua’s jealousy: he wishes all YHWH’s people were prophets. Joel later turns that wish-like horizon into a promise of the Spirit poured out broadly.
The Spirit resting on many in Numbers 11 forms a strong canonical trajectory toward the broad Spirit outpouring at Pentecost. The trajectory is especially striking because Moses himself wishes that all YHWH’s people might receive the Spirit, while Acts narrates a much wider public outpouring.
