False shepherds and the LORD who shepherds his flock
Israel’s leaders are condemned as shepherds who consume the flock’s benefits while neglecting the weak, sick, injured, straying, and lost. Their failure scatters the sheep and leaves them exposed, so God promises to remove the self-serving shepherds from control of his flock.
The startling answer to failed human shepherds is that the LORD himself will search for, rescue, gather, feed, bind up, and strengthen his sheep. John 10 places Jesus in this shepherding role, making Ezekiel 34 one of the book’s strongest YHWH-to-Christ canonical trajectories: Jesus’ Good Shepherd claim gathers up work Ezekiel assigns to Israel’s God.
Why this connection is credible: Paul’s command to shepherd God’s flock stands in the biblical shepherd-leadership trajectory of Ezekiel 34.
